Das Salz riecht leicht nach Ammoniak. In geringer Konzentration ist Ammoniumkarbonat im Meerwasser und in der Luft enthalten. Ammonium carbonicum entsteht unter anderem beim Einleiten von Kohlendioxid in Ammoniakwasser und bildet in der Regel ein gelblich-wei\u00dfes, nach Ammoniak riechendes kristallinisches Pulver.
